Todd Sattler
Attorney
For more than 20 years, Todd has handled complex litigation for individuals, corporations, and public entities, trying cases before state and federal courts in North Dakota, Minnesota, and California. After graduating from the University of Minnesota law school in 1990 and completing a judicial clerkship, Todd joined the Minneapolis firm Gregerson, Rosow, Johnson & Nilan, Ltd. where he focused on insurance and surety bond defense litigation. In 1999, he returned to his home state of North Dakota to join the Litigation Division of the Office of Attorney General, serving as lead attorney in the Tobacco Master Settlement Litigation and lead attorney in the multistate litigation trial team in the United States v. Oracle antitrust case. Todd later worked as general counsel to the North Dakota Industrial Commission where his duties included conducting hearings before the Oil and Gas Division. While at the State, he also served as general counsel for the State Land Department and State Water Commission. In 2011, Todd joined Baumstark Braaten Law Partners where most of his practice involved representation of landowners and mineral owners in cases against energy companies. In 2013, Todd left the practice of law to help found and operate a small business. In 2019, he re-joined Braaten Law Firm.
While oil and gas work consumes the majority of his current practice, Mr. Sattler handles a variety of other litigation matters, including landowner lawsuits involving agricultural law. Todd’s focus has always been complex litigation, from premises liability and surety bond defense cases and plaintiff employment cases early in his career, to multi-state antitrust and tobacco enforcement actions on behalf of the state, to litigating on behalf of mineral owners and landowners in disputes with energy companies. He will continue to focus on complex litigation cases, with an emphasis on oil and gas work.
